African Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme
This scholarship programme is directed at scholars in Africa, engaged in research on the African continent. Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply for these scholarships.

Next deadline for applications: 1 April 2012 (for a scholarship in 2013).

Application form (pdf)
The purpose of the programme
One important task of the Nordic Africa Institute is to establish and maintain relations with African research communities. This is inter alia carried out through a Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme, the aim of which is to provide opportunities for its participants to pursue their own research projects, thereby indirectly strengthening the academic milieux in African countries, and promoting scholarly exchange with Nordic research communities.

Who can apply?
The Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme is directed at scholars in Africa engaged in research on/about the African continent and with a proven track record of extensive post-graduate research experience. We would especially like to encourage women to apply for these scholarships.

Applications are invited from scholars with research projects related to current thematic research clusters at the Institute:

Agrarian Change, Property and Resources
Conflict, Displacement and Transformation
Globalization, Trade and Regional Integration
Urban Dynamics
Please see this website for more details on the research clusters.

Applicants are requested to identify within what cluster their project fits best.

The scholarship and facilities
The Guest Researchers’ scholarship includes a return air-fare (economy class), accommodation, a subsistence allowance of SEK (Swedish kronor) 300 (approx. USD 45) a day plus an installation grant of SEK 2,500 (approx. USD 370), a shared office and free photocopying facilities up to a maximum of 1,000 copies. Guest Researchers have access to a computer/MS Word at the office and have to do their own typing.

The maximum duration of the stay is 90 days. To be entitled to a refund of the travel costs, the Guest Researcher has to stay for at least two months.

Please note that most academic institutions in the Nordic countries, including the Nordic Africa Institute, are closed or at least running at a reduced capacity during the periods 15 June–15 August and 15 December–15 January. Applicants are thus asked not to choose these periods for their visit.

The Institute’s library is specialized in literature on contemporary Africa and focuses on Social Sciences. Guest Researchers also have access to the Uppsala University Library, including their online resources, and to the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Additional activities
The Guest Researcher is expected to give a lecture in at least one other Nordic country. Train or air tickets (economy class) and accommodation will be provided for this trip.

Guest Researchers are sometimes invited to write a discussion paper for the Institute’s publications’ series or a short article for the Institute’s website. The draft of the discussion paper should be presented during the stay in Uppsala, preferably in a public forum.
The application should contain

a completed application form (3 copies)
an up-to-date curriculum vitæ (3 copies)
a well elaborated research proposal outlining the main features of the research topic. The proposal should focus on the project to be carried out at the Nordic Africa Institute and include the expected results. Length of the proposal: 5 pages. (3 copies)
copies of and/or references to the applicant’s publications; the two most important articles related to the research project to be pursued at the Nordic Africa Institute. (3 copies)
a signed letter of support from the applicant’s Head of Department or other senior scholar in the same field.
Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered.

Deadline
Applications for positions in 2013 must be in by 1 April 2012 and can be sent by email or by post/airmail.

Selection of Guest Researchers will take place during May–June 2012.

Applications sent by post/airmail should be addressed to
The Nordic Africa Institute
The Programme Officer
The African Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme (AGRP)
P.O. Box 1703
SE-751 47 Uppsala, Sweden

Please note! Airmail from Africa may take several weeks to reach Sweden.

Applications sent by email should be addressed to
Inga-Britt Isaksson Faris, Programme Officer, email inga-britt.faris@nai.uu.se

Please note! On the subject line of your email, write: “APPLICATION African Guest Researchers’ Scholarship.” Applications sent by email should only contain 1 copy of each document.

PhD Studentship
We are accepting applications for a PhD studentship available for start in the autumn of 2012. The project will focus on the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber), an extraordinary underground animal that is the longest-lived rodent (longevity over 30 years) and is exceptionally resistant to cancer. Because DNA damage accumulation is thought to be one of the causes of ageing, this projects aims to characterize the cellular responses to DNA damage of Heterocephalus and identify unique features (e.g., related to DNA repair, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis). Other stress responses, such as responses to oxidative damage and oncogene transduction may be studied as well. The project will employ state-of-the-art next-generation sequencing technologies as well as modern cell and molecular biology techniques. The exact directions of the project, however, will be adapted to fit the research interests of the student.

This research project is in competition for funding with other projects at our institution. Usually the project which receives the best applicant will be awarded the funding. The funding is only available to UK citizens and residents. Non-UK students interested in this project, however, are encouraged to contact us as it may be possible to apply for personal fellowships.

Interested students should contact Dr Joao Pedro de Magalhaes (aging[ at ]liv.ac.uk) in the first instance for an informal discussion.

Other Research Opportunities in the Biology and Genetics of Ageing
We have other projects available for enthusiastic and ambitious self-funded students and postdocs. Projects can be experimental, computational, or a combination of both and are tailored to the interests of the individual. Prospective students and postdocs are welcome to contact us (aging[ at ]liv.ac.uk) to discuss possible common interests and we are happy to support applications for external fellowships.

Integrative Genomics of Ageing Group
The focus of our group is on the biology and genetics of ageing. Our research combines modern bioinformatics and experimental methods, in particular cell and molecular biology, to help decipher the human genome and provide new insights into the genetics of longevity, ageing and other complex traits. We are located in the Institute of Integrative Biology at the University of Liverpool in the UK. We have active collaborations with research groups in Europe, Israel, and the USA. Although travelling is not essential, it is therefore possible for members of our group to acquire additional expertise in other labs. More information about our group and projects we are involved in are available online:
